Porto (Oporto) is a beautiful city located in the northwest of Portugal that offers great shopping, excellent restaurants, a lively nightlife and historic buildings. It is a city steeped in history and culture that has undergone a vast amount of regeneration in recent years, yet it is also renowned for the many architectural structures and monuments that have been built by some of Europe's most prominent architects of the past. There are numerous examples of stunning architecture from Roman, Baroque, Gothic, Renaissance and Neoclassical periods, particularly in the historic quarter.

After Lisbon, Porto is the country's second largest city and it is often referred to as the capital of Portugal's north due to its prominence in the cultural, commercial and industrial spheres. Many of the country's major corporations have their head offices in the Porto district and the area is heavily industrialised.

Not only is Porto a centre for business and commerce, but sport is also hugely important in this city, being the home of two of Portugal's greatest football teams, FC Porto and Boavista FC.

The city itself has a population of approximately 245,000 inhabitants yet the surrounding areas that make up the Greater Metropolitan Area of Oporto is home to around 2 million.

This historic metropolis has been built around the River Douro, which splits the city in two, and much of the industry in Oporto is centred in the port area where the river flows into the Atlantic Ocean.

By the 17th century Oporto was already a famous wine-producing centre, and as well as the renowned Port wine, other products such as olive oil, fruit and fish were exported from here.

South of the River Douro is Vila Nova de Gaia, Porto's centre of Port wine production. There are more than 50 different port-making companies in the town, many of which give guided tours around their distilleries or lodges as they are more commonly known.

Due to its location in the north of Portugal, just off the Atlantic Ocean and at the furthermost western corner of Europe, Oporto is not regarded as a huge tourist hotspot, although it has much to offer the seasoned traveller. Hotels and restaurants are relatively cheap and you will find that your money will last a lot longer than in other European cities.

A good time to visit Porto is during the summer, as the temperatures are never as high as in other European cities located further south. Its position next to the Atlantic produces gentle breezes that are perfect to cool down a hot summer's day, although it also brings an unusually high amount of rainfall, which may put some visitors off. During the winter months, Porto is absolutely freezing and so if you must visit then, it is best to wrap up warm.

Porto is served by the Francisco Sa Carneiro international airport, which is well situated for the nearby cities including Porto, Maia and Braga. It is situated in a very accessible position, just off a major highway and with links to the Metro and railway system.

Several airlines such as AirBerlin and TAP offer more than one flight a day to Porto, 7 days a week.

Flight times to Porto from the UK are approximately 2hr 20 minutes if flying direct from one of London's airports such as Heathrow or Gatwick. It is not always possible to book direct flights from other airports in the UK and this means that flight times could range from anywhere between 4 hours to 12 hours depending on departures times for the connecting flights.

It is often worth checking out flights to London and catching a direct flight from there, as this may save time. Some of the stopover airports include Barcelona, Geneva or Pisa (Italy).
